Traditional methods of handling flowers are insufficient to allow for maritime shipping and storage of most types of flowers. The floral industry has been searching for a better solution. A simple, easy-to-implement solution that allows for reception of high-quality flowers even after prolonged shipping or storage, following a standard hydration treatment.
That’s the story behind Xbloom™, our modified atmosphere/ modified humidity packaging (MA/MH) solution designed specifically for flowers.
The Technology That Makes Xbloom™ Different
Xbloom™ fresh cut flower bags represent a breakthrough in floral preservation. Powered by Xtend® modified atmosphere and modified humidity technology, it creates the optimal environment inside the bag: a perfectly balanced microclimate that protects your flowers throughout the entire supply chain, extending their shelf life.
Here’s how it works:
Controlling the Atmosphere
After flowers are cut, they continue to respire. The faster this happens, the faster they age. Xbloom™ packaging lowers oxygen levels and increases carbon dioxide inside the package. This slows respiration, inhibits ethylene production and action, and slows the aging process. Another benefit of modified atmosphere is that it reduces the risk of gray mold (Botrytis), one of the biggest threats to flower quality.
Note that in the case of roses and some other sensitive flowers, it is necessary to treat with commercially available preservatives for cut flowers to achieve the optimal effect.
Moisture Management Inside Xbloom™ Packaging
Too little humidity inside the bag, and your flowers dehydrate. Too much, and you’re inviting microbial growth. Xbloom™ modified atmosphere packaging is made from proprietary film structures that help maintain optimal humidity levels inside the packaging while expelling excess moisture.
This dual action, modified atmosphere together with modified humidity reduces dehydration and considerably reduces the risk of microbial decay.
What Xbloom™ MAP Means for Your Floral Business
Understanding the technology is one thing. But what does Xbloom™ deliver for flower growers, packers, and exporters? Here are the real-world advantages:
Longer Freshness Window
Xbloom™ preserves quality and significantly prolongs storage time for many flower varieties, ensuring that their quality is preserved for extended periods. The technology has been tested and used commercially with roses, carnations, gypsophila, alstroemeria, delphinium, peonies, lilies, mixed bouquets, and more.
Protection Against Botrytis
Gray mold (Botrytis) is one of the most common causes of flower spoilage. By the combination of elevated carbon dioxide concentrations inside the bags together with moisture management, Xbloom™ reduces the risk of this Botrytis growth. In case of roses and several additional flowers, it is necessary to apply antifungal treatments before packing. The result? Cleaner, more vibrant flowers and substantially lower spoilage rates.
Better Hydration Throughout Transport
Xbloom™ maintains optimal humidity levels, creating ideal conditions for keeping cut flowers hydrated during storage and transport. Your blooms arrive looking fresh and full, not wilted and tired. Note that it is necessary to apply a hydration treatment after long storage or sea shipment.
Real Supply Chain Flexibility
This is where Xbloom™ becomes a game changer. Extended storage capabilities help you navigate real business challenges:
- Inventory management: Preserve flower quality until you’ve accumulated enough for efficient shipment, or until market conditions become more favorable
- Pre-holiday storage: Store and accumulate flowers ahead of peak holiday seasons when demand and value rise dramatically
- Sea freight opportunities: Successfully transport flowers by sea while maintaining consistently high quality upon arrival, reducing both transportation costs and your carbon footprint
These aren’t just theoretical benefits. Flower growers, packers, and exporters using Xbloom™ may open up new markets, improving their margins, and reducing waste throughout their operations.
